In Memoriam: Honoring Former Senator Louis M. Pate, Jr.
The Wayne County Republican Party extends its heartfelt condolences and profound gratitude in memory of former North Carolina Senator Louis Milford Pate, Jr. (September 22, 1936 – August 29, 2025). A devoted public servant and passionate advocate for eastern North Carolina, Senator Pate’s distinguished career and personal dedication left an enduring mark on our community and state.
Born in Duplin County and raised in Hopewell, Virginia, Senator Pate served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Major in 1982. His military service included navigating B-57 bombers during the Vietnam War and later guiding F-111s.
Returning to civilian life, he became a respected businessman and civic leader in Mount Olive, holding local roles such as mayor and city councilman before entering state politics.
In the North Carolina General Assembly, he served multiple terms:
-
State House: Representing Wayne County in the 11th District (1995–1996 and 2003–2008).
-
State Senate: From 2011 to 2019, representing first the 5th and then the 7th District, covering Wayne, Pitt, and Lenoir counties. He achieved leadership as Deputy President Pro Tempore from 2013 to 2019.
-
He also co-chaired Appropriations on Health and Human Services and Health Care, chaired the Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services, and contributed to budget and sentencing reform initiatives.
Senator Pate resigned from the Senate in 2019 due to health reasons and passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025, in Mount Olive at the age of 88.
